Receive Silver Crowns

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University's student newspaper and yearbook were honored last weekend at the spring College Media Convention in New York City.

The College Heights Herald won two Silver Crowns, one for the 2002 fall semester and one for the 2003 spring semester, and the Talisman won a Silver Crown for the 2003 yearbook. The awards were presented March 20.

Talisman staff members picked up 18 Gold Circle Awards -- six firsts, five seconds, five thirds and two certificates of merit. Herald staff members received two firsts, three seconds and a certificate of merit.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association's 21st Gold Circle Awards program, its annual individual competition for writers, editors, designers and photographers, attracted 3,366 entries in the collegiate competition in 77 categories. A total of 683 first, second, third place or certificate of merit awards were given.

Only three yearbooks and eight newspapers received Gold Crown Awards from CSPA. Other Silver Crown newspapers were from Humber College in Toronto, Canada, University of Alabama, Penn State University, University of Mississippi, University of Pennsylvania, Ithaca College, University of Michigan, Murray State University and University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Caroline Lynch was the fall 2002 Herald editor and Erica Walsh was the spring 2003 editor. Lynch graduated in December 2002 and is a business writer at The Courier-Journal; Walsh graduated in May and is a reporter at the News Enterprise in Elizabethtown.

The Herald won Gold Crown awards in 1999, 2000 and 2003 and two in 2001. Last November, the Herald won its 10th National Pacemaker award from Associated Collegiate Press.

In addition to the Talisman, Silver Crown winners were University of Texas, Vanderbilt University, University of Miami, University of Oklahoma and Northwest Missouri State. Stephanie Gladney was the 2003 Talisman editor. She graduated in May and is a copy editor and designer at the Lexington Herald-Leader.

The Talisman was a national finalist in its first Crown competition since returning to publication after a six-year absence. It had won Gold Crowns in 1983 and 1996. At the ACP meeting in November, the 2003 Talisman received second place in Best in Show for yearbooks with fewer than 300 pages. All of the Talisman entries except one were in the color competition.

Receiving first place in the Gold Circle competition were Abbey Brown, a senior from Vincennes, Ind., news writing, Herald; Bowling Green senior Rodrick Reidsma, art /illustration (two or more colors), Herald; Thomas Cordy, a senior from Huntsville, Ala., headline writing, Talisman; Talisman staff, caption writing, academic spread and organization or Greeks spread; Bowling Green senior Diane Mattingly, academic photo, Talisman; and Bowling Green senior Ryan Long, general use of graphics, Talisman.

Placing second were Brown, news feature, Herald; Mat Thorne, a senior from Morgantown, W.Va., art illustration portfolio of work, Herald; Steven King, a December graduate now working at WashingtonPost.com, and Amy Merrick, a May graduate who is a graduate student at the University of Tennessee, photo story, Herald; J. Michael Moore, a senior from Franklin, Tenn., sports feature writing, Talisman; Libby Funke, a junior from Evansville, Ind., organization/Greek writing, Talisman; Gladney and Hannah von Zutphen-Kann, a senior from Ann Arbor, Mich., student life spread, black and white, Talisman; Talisman staff, people spread; Bowling Green sophomore Katie Clark, informational graphics, Talisman.

Third-place winners were Cordy and Gladney, theme and concept, opening and closing spread design and color spread, Talisman; Talisman staff, sports spread; Elizabeth Hale, a Nicholasville junior, personality profiles, Talisman.

Certificates of merit were given to Jenny Sevcik, a December graduate now a photographer in Vicksburg, Miss., sports action photograph, Talisman; Cordy, feature presentation, Talisman; and Herald staff, photo layout, two or more pages.

Representing Western at the convention were Bob Adams, director of Student Publications and Herald and Talisman adviser; JoAnn Thompson, Student Publications business manager; and Jackie Bretz, assistant Talisman adviser.
