WKU Concrete Canoe Team June 23, 2004 Western's "Matrix Reinforced" was one of 22 national finalists in the June 17-20 competition in Washington, D.C. Western's concrete canoe team, which has advanced to the national competition for nine consecutive years, had placed in the top 10 nationally for the past four years, including a fourth-place finish in 2002. The University of Wisconsin-Madison won the competition followed by Universite Laval of Canada and University of Alabama-Huntsville. The concrete canoe competition includes academic (design paper and oral presentation) and athletic (canoe racing) portions. The project also gives students hands-on experience in design, construction, management, problem solving and teamwork. Members of this year's concrete canoe team include: Justin Flickinger of Glasgow; Jon Kemp of Auburn; Jared Nix, Shannon Hayes and Travis Spidel, all of Bowling Green; Matt Rogers of Columbia; Sara Noe and Tracy May, both of Louisville; Deneatra Hack and Kyle Hunt, both of Morgantown; Will McDonough of Calhoun; Darren Stewart of Caneyville; Travis Carrico of Springfield; James Jones of Somerset; and Sean Sheffer of Morganfield.
