Bowling Green, Ky. - A Western Kentucky University faculty member is one of 20 participants in the American Society of Newspaper Editors' 2004 Institute for Journalism Excellence.

Dr. Linda Lumsden, an associate professor in the School of Journalism and Broadcasting, is spending six weeks this summer at The Herald in Everett, Wash.

Lumsden and the other professors are working as reporters, photographers, copy editors and online producers as part of an intensive ASNE program that strengthens ties between educators and editors.

The institute, which started in 1995, is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The program provides a $5,500 stipend plus housing and travel.

The 2004 institute began June 6-11 at the American Press Institute in Reston, Va. The participants, who represent universities from across the United States, will work at the newspapers through July 23.
