Bowling Green, Ky. - Two Western Kentucky University agriculture students won a national competition recently at the American Forage and Grassland Council's annual conference.

Jeremy Kessens, a May graduate from Tell City, Ind., and Adam Massey, a Bowling Green senior, won the AFGC's first Forage Bowl Contest by defeating teams from Ohio State and Virginia Tech. Dr. Byron Sleugh, assistant professor of agriculture, coached the WKU team.

In the competition, teams were asked questions ranging from plant identification and hay and silage production to plant morphology and animal disorders related to plants they eat (forages). The team received a plaque and a cash award.

Dr. Sleugh and graduate student David Embrey presented papers related to the animal waste management research being conducted on WKU's farm under a USDA grant.

The American Forage and Grassland Council conference was held June 12-16 in Roanoke, Va. The AFGC is an international organization dedicated to the profitable production and sustainable utilization of quality forage and grasslands.
