Bowling Green, Ky. - The College Heights Herald and the Talisman, Western Kentucky University's student newspaper and yearbook, have been named collegiate crown finalists by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

The awards, either a Gold Crown or Silver Crown, will be presented March 19 in New York City.

A Gold Crown award would give the Herald a sweep of major student newspaper awards for the second straight year. In November, the Herald won its 10th National Pacemaker award from Associated Collegiate Press.

The Herald won Gold Crown awards in 1999, 2000 and 2003 and two in 2001.

Caroline Lynch was the fall 2003 Herald editor and Erica Walsh was the spring 2003 editor. Lynch graduated in December 2002 and is a business writer at The Courier-Journal; Walsh graduated in May and is a reporter at the News Enterprise in Elizabethtown.

The Talisman is a national finalist in its first major competition since returning to publication after a six-year absence. At the ACP meeting in November, the 2003 Talisman received second place in Best in Show for yearbooks with fewer than 300 pages.

Stephanie Gladney was the 2003 Talisman editor. She graduated in May and is a designer at the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Other newspaper crown finalists are from Ball State University, Santa Ana (Calif.) College, Humber College in Toronto; Indiana University, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, University of Alabama, Penn State University, University of Mississippi, University of Pennsylvania, Ithaca (N.Y.) College, University of Michigan, Murray State University, University of Oklahoma, University of Texas at Arlington, Arizona State University and University of North Carolina.

Other yearbook finalists are from Indiana University, James Madison University, University of Texas at Austin, Vanderbilt University, University of Miami, Kansas State University, University of Oklahoma and Northwest Missouri State University.
