Staff Members Honored By KPA

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University's student newspaper received top honors in the Kentucky Press Association's Excellence in Kentucky Newspapers Contest.
The College Heights Herald edged the Kentucky Kernel, the daily student newspaper at the University of Kentucky, for the General Excellence Award in the Associate Member Newspaper Division.
Awards were presented Jan. 23 at the KPA convention in Lexington.
Herald staff members receiving first-place awards were Kyle Tucker, a senior from Clarksville, Tenn., Sports Feature; Abbey Brown, a senior from Vincennes, Ind., Enterprise or Analytical Story; the Herald staff, On-Going/Extended Coverage Story; Brett Marshall, a Bowling Green senior, Spot News Picture; Tyler Pelan, a junior from Champaign, Ill., Feature Picture; Herald staff, Picture Essay (Spot, General or Feature); H. Rick Mach, a May graduate from Sterling, Va., Sports Picture; Herald staff, Sports Picture Essay; Herald staff, Special Sections; Herald staff, Sports Page/Section; Herald staff, Lifestyle Page; and Daniel Pike, a December graduate from Glasgow, Editorial Page.
Placing second were Brown, Feature Story; Kyle Hightower, a Paducah senior, Sports Column; Keith Farner, a Louisville junior, Sports Feature; Shawntaye Hopkins, a Louisville sophomore, Enterprise or Analytical Story; Henrik Edsenius, a May graduate from Sweden; Feature Picture; Price Chambers, a Nashville senior, Picture Essay (Spot, General or Feature); Herald staff, Sports Picture Essay; Herald staff, Special Sections; and Herald staff, Front Page.
Third-place honors were won by Joe Lord, a Louisville junior, Spot News Coverage; J. Michael Moore, a senior from Brentwood, Tenn., Sports Column; Lord, Investigative Story or Series; Josh McCoy, a Fancy Farm senior, Spot News Picture; Aaron Thompson, a senior from Murfreesboro, Tenn., General News Picture; Shannon Guthrie, a senior from Picture Essay (Spot, General or Feature); and Justin Fowler, a Columbia junior, Sports Picture.
Receiving honorable mention were Pike, Editorial; Mai Hoang, a Louisville senior, Investigative Story or Series; Fowler, General News Picture; and Jenny Sevcik, a May graduate from LaGrange, and Steven King, a December graduate from Pelham, Ala., Picture Essay (Spot, General or Feature).
