WKU'S Center For Cave And
Karst Studies Hosts Canadians

February 05, 2004

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Center for Cave and Karst Studies in Western Kentucky University's Department of Geography and Geology recently hosted 50 students from the Department of Geography and Geology at Canada's McMaster University.

McMaster University in Hamilton has one of the world's most recognized karst programs and each year students visit WKU for tours and field trips, including a visit to Mammoth Cave National Park.

The Center for Cave and Karst Studies provides them with a field trip guide book, a tour of the department, including the Center's laboratory and facilities, a discussion of the Center's geophysical equipment used for karst research, and a tour of the region to examine some of the environmental problems in the Bowling Green area associated with karst and the methods used to remediate them. The field trip ends each year with a boat tour of Lost River Cave.

The Center provides similar field trips to students from other universities, including Vanderbilt and Miami of Ohio, each year.

"Our relationship with McMaster and other universities is an excellent example of the national prominence of our research centers and exemplifies the ongoing collaboration between students and faculty that helps us to solve pressing environmental and community problems," said Dr. David Keeling, head of the Geography and Geology Department.
