February 07, 2004

Bowling Green, Ky. - Three Western Kentucky University students were killed and two others injured in a Saturday morning auto accident near Elizabethtown.

The three killed were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on I-65 north of Upton. They were Rachel Blevens, 19, of Oakland, Ky.; Katie Jeter, 19, of Franklin, Tenn.; and Rachel Cate, 18, of Nashville. The injured were Jessica L. Sutton, 19, of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Cara Wright, 18, of Germantown, Tenn.

All five were freshmen at Western and members of Phi Mu sorority.

"We are deeply saddened by the deaths of these students," WKU President Gary Ransdell said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families and friends as well as to the two students who were injured."

Dr. Ransdell said the students will be remembered with a moment of silence before Western's men's basketball game Sunday night. Other memorial services that are in the planning stages will be announced later.

Counselors from the University's Counseling Center have been made available to any students requesting their services.

"Counselors will be on call as long as necessary," said Dr. Gene Tice, vice president for Student Affairs at Western. "Anyone interested in speaking with a counselor should contact the Counseling and Testing Center at 745-3159."
