Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University's endowment has grown by 61 percent from fiscal year 2001 to the present, according to Tom Hiles, WKU's vice president for Institutional Advancement, and NACUBO, the National Association of College and University Business Officers.

In the 2002-2003 NACUBO endowment report, Western reported a 16.2 percent increase in its endowment, leading both its benchmarks and other Kentucky institutions reporting.

"This is the third straight year for double-digit growth," Hiles said. "We are proud to be among the leaders nationally in percentage increase. This reflects a better stock market climate, and more importantly, the generous support of our alumni and friends."

Western reported its endowment at $56.4 million for the NACUBO study, which reflects numbers as of June 30, 2003. Hiles said Western's current endowment, as of Jan. 30, 2004, stands at $67.4 million, which represents a 19.5 percent increase seven months into the fiscal year. The total includes just under $5 million secured through the Commonwealth of Kentucky's "Bucks for Brains" matching program.
