February 11, 2004

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Agriculture Ambassadors, a group of 10 students in Western Kentucky University's Department of Agriculture, recently attended the National Agriculture Ambassador Conference at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.

While at the conference, the Ag Ambassadors presented two 50-minute workshops that highlighted the successful "Agriculture Open House" hosted by the Agriculture Department for the past two years. The open house gives prospective students a chance to visit campus and get admitted to WKU several months before they would have otherwise been admitted at other state universities. The focus of the workshop was on how to plan such an event and successfully implement it.

The National Ag Ambassador Conference is an annual event that brings together students from more than 45 schools to share ideas on how to recruit, retain and motivate students in agriculture and agriculture-related programs, and to promote agriculture as a discipline of interest in college across the nation.

WKU students learned about agriculture open houses at the conference in 2001 and brought the idea back and tried it for the first time in 2002.

Two faculty members accompanied the group at the conference.
