Bowling Green, Ky. - "The Cowboy Who Couldn't See," an original story by 6-year-old Hannah Elizabeth Pitcock of Bowling Green, has been singled out for special recognition by the popular public television program Reading Rainbow.

Pitcock's story about a nearsighted cowboy who gets his eyes fixed is one of 120 stories to be featured on the Reading Rainbow PBS kids webpage this fall.

The Pine Tree Home School first-grader's story was pegged for national recognition after she received a first place in the local Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators contest sponsored by WKYU-PBS. More than 100 youngsters from throughout Kentucky participated in the contest last spring.

The contest, sponsored annually by Western's Public Television and Barnes & Noble, encourages kindergarten through third-grade students to write and illustrate their own stories. The entries are judged locally, and winning entries compete nationally.
