Power Back On At WKU, August 26, 2004 According to Steve Barz of WKU's Facilities Management, full service has been restored to the affected buildings. Electrical service was restored Wednesday afternoon and chillers for air conditioning were restarted this morning. The cause of the outage, which began about 9 a.m. Wednesday, has not been determined. Barz said the problem was in WKU equipment connected with the Dogwood substation owned by Bowling Green Municipal Utilities. The outage remains under investigation. Buildings affected by the outage were: Southwest Hall, Northeast Hall, Grise Hall, Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center, Cravens Graduate Center and Library, McLean Hall, Bates-Runner Hall, Public Safety Building, Physical Plant Building, Schneider Hall, Alumni Center, College Heights Foundation Building and the Wetherby Administration Building. Meanwhile, a WKU electrician who was hospitalized after an incident related to the outage is recovering at the Medical Center at Bowling Green. Herb Hess, 28, of Tompkinsville, collapsed while working on an electrical subpanel in a mechanical room in the Parking Structure at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday. Hess was part of a crew preparing to run a temporary line to restore electrical service. Coworkers pulled Hess from the room and called for help. It remains unclear as to why Hess collapsed, Barz said. While he has been moved from intensive care to a private room, Barz said Hess is expected to remain hospitalized for a few more days for additional testing. The incident is under investigation by WKU's Environmental Health and Safety Office and WKU Police.
