Service Day Set For Thursday

Bowling Green, Ky. - The ALIVE Center, in conjunction with Western Kentucky University's Department of Housing and Residence Life and M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan, is gearing up to send more than 200 first-year Western students into the Bowling Green-Warren County area for a day of community service Thursday (Aug. 19).

The Big Red Blitz Community Service Day, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will introduce first-year students participating in M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan to vital services in the community and encourage them to continue to volunteer for those agencies in need. M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan is a five-day program that helps students transition from home and high school to the university.

Agencies participating in Thursday's event include the American Cancer Society, Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society, Boys and Girls Club of Bowling Green, Barren River Area Safe Space, Barren River Imaginative Museum of Science, Bowling Green Public Works Department, Bowling Green-Warren County Community Education, Family Enrichment, Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, Inc., Habitat for Humanity, Helping Hands, Bowling Green International Festival, Inc., Lost River Cave, Salvation Army, United Way of Southern Kentucky and Western Kentucky Active Day Center. Activities vary from helping construct a home to preparing activities for an after-school program.

The ALIVE Center is part of Western Kentucky University's Juvenile Delinquency Prevention Program and is a nonprofit agency, funded by a Department of Justice federal grant, secured by Sen. Mitch McConnell.

The Center links volunteers to agencies in the Bowling Green-Warren County area, as well as serving as an information clearinghouse for human service organizations.

The ALIVE Center, located at 1818 31W Bypass, is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For information about the services provided at the ALIVE Center, call (270) 782-0082.
