Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University alumnus Thomas A. George, a sports writer for The New York Times, will be the guest speaker for the Society of African American Alumni’s Spring Celebration.

The Spring Celebration begins with dinner at 6 p.m. April 17 at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center at WKU’s South Campus. The program begins at 7 p.m.

The Society of African Alumni also will present two scholarships as part of Spring Celebration and will recognize African American Leadership Scholars.

George, a native of Paducah and 1982 graduate of WKU, worked at the Detroit Free Press before joining the New York Times in 1988. This year will be his 17th consecutive season covering the NFL and Super Bowl as national pro football writer/columnist for the New York Times.

At Spring Celebration, he’ll share his thoughts about achievement, his writing experiences and his Western experience.

"I keep in touch with Western and attempt to come back often because it is home and my roots and continues to be a source of inspiration,” George said. “It is the people that make a university and Western is second to none in high-quality, high-character people.”

Tickets for Spring Celebration are $25. For information, call the Alumni Relations office at (270) 745-4395 or 1-888-WKU-ALUM.
