104-Year-Old Newspaper
Columnist Honored At WKU
April 22, 2004
Bowling Green, Ky. - A 104-year-old columnist who began his newspaper career just two years ago was honored earlier this month at the regional Society of Professional Journalists conference at Western Kentucky University.
John Crystal Morris of Horse Branch was recognized for his “Something to Think About” religion column in the Ohio County Messenger, a weekly newspaper in Beaver Dam.
Morris, who has preached in the Methodist and General Baptist churches throughout almost 80 years of evangelical work, never had newspaper experience before writing for the Messenger. Because his health prevented him from delivering sermons in person, he decided to take his ministry to print.
Throughout several health setbacks, Morris has continued writing, taking his typewriter to the hospital and a professional care home.
Several family members, including children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, accepted the award on his behalf April 3 at WKU’s Mass Media and Technology Hall. The award was presented by Ohio County Messenger writer Sam Ford, a WKU student.
