Butterfly, Moth Survey Planned
At New Biological Preserve

April 19, 2004

Bowling Green, Ky. - Butterfly and moth lovers will converge on Western Kentucky University's new Upper Green River Biological Preserve Saturday (April 24) to create a list of all the butterfly and moth species in the Hart County preserve.

The exercise is important because the habitat at the preserve is suitable for the survival of several rare and/or endangered butterflies and moths, but it has not yet been determined whether these species are actually present, according to event organizer Dr. Jeffrey Marcus, assistant professor of biology.

"Once we know these rare species are present at Upper Green River, we can make recommendations about how to manage the preserve in order to protect these populations," he said.

The event is sponsored by the WKU Department of Biology, the WKU Center for Biodiversity Studies and the Society of Kentucky Lepidopterists.

Note: Members of the media are invited to attend Saturday's event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For a map or other details, contact Dr. Jeffrey Marcus at (270) 745-2043 or Jeffrey.marcus@wku.edu
