WKU Forensic Team Opens
Season With First-Place Finish

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University's forensic team placed first in individual events sweepstakes, debate sweepstakes and combined individual events and debate sweepstakes at its first tournament of the year.

Twenty-one members of the William E. Bivin Forensic Society competed Sept. 20-21 at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. Western placed ahead of Truman State and Illinois State in individual events and ahead of Truman State and Central Michigan in debate sweepstakes.

This weekend, the WKU team will split into three directions as groups travel to Truman State in Kirksville, Mo., Middle Tennessee State in Murfreesboro and Clemson University in Clemson, S.C.

The following students placed in the final rounds of the Purdue tournament:

Chris Brasfield, a sophomore from Evansville, Ind., second in individual sweepstakes, dramatic interpretation champion, duo interpretation champion (with Ashley Courtney), fifth in prose interpretation.

Evelio Silvera, a senior from Fort Myers, Fla., extemporaneous speaking champion, persuasive speaking champion, final 16 in parliamentary debate (with Caleb Williams).

Jenny Corum, an Auburn sophomore, parliamentary debate champion (with Hannah Reliford), top speaker in parliamentary debate, semifinalist in impromptu speaking.

Ashley Courtney, a Mayfield sophomore, duo interpretation champion (with Chris Brasfield), second in prose interpretation.

Caleb Williams, a junior from Lewisville, Texas, informative speaking champion, third in impromptu speaking, final 16 in parliamentary debate (with Evelio Silvera).

Courtney Wright, a sophomore from Evansville, Ind., after-dinner speaking champion, fourth in dramatic interpretation, fourth in poetry interpretation.

Justin Cress, a Florence sophomore, Lincoln-Douglas debate champion, third in Lincoln-Douglas debate speaker awards.

Hannah Reliford, a Georgetown junior, parliamentary debate champion (with Jenny Corum).

Joelle Perry, a Florence freshman, novice extemporaneous speaking champion, novice impromptu speaking champion, final 16 in Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Lydia Nelson, a freshman from Carver, Mass., novice prose interpretation champion, third in varsity after-dinner speaking.

Stacy Bernaugh, a senior from Seaside, Calif., quarterfinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate, third in parliamentary debate speaker awards, sixth in extemporaneous speaking, 10th in Lincoln-Douglas speaker awards.

Jennifer Purcell, a junior from Lewisville, Texas, quarterfinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate, fifth in extemporaneous speaking, seventh in parliamentary debate speaker awards, semifinalist in impromptu speaking.

Tony Damico, a Phoenix senior, second in programmed oral interpretation, fifth in poetry interpretation, sixth in prose interpretation.

Lindsey Nave, a senior from Harrisburg, Ill., third in programmed oral interpretation, third in prose interpretation.

Chris Blackford, a sophomore from Evansville, Ind., second in dramatic interpretation.

Nicole Hawk, an Upton sophomore, final 16 in Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Kate Hertweck, a junior from Evansville, Ind., ninth in Lincoln-Douglas speaker awards.

Emily Gibson, a Hodgenville freshman, semifinalist in novice parliamentary debate (with Barry Fields), top speaker in novice parliamentary debate, top novice in informative speaking.

Barry Fields, a Bowling Green freshman, semifinalist in novice parliamentary debate (with Emily Gibson), second in novice parliamentary debate speaker awards.
