Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University's award-winning forensic team begins its 2003-04 season next weekend with a new goal: winning the National Forensic Association's debate title.

"Our No. 1 goal this year is the national debate championship," said Judy Woodring, director of the William E. Bivin Forensic Society. "That's what we'll be working real hard to accomplish."

Last year, the team accomplished an unprecedented sweep of major national and international championships by winning the National Forensic Association title, the American Forensic Association National Individual Events Tournament, the International Forensic Association tournament and the Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kappa Alpha National Tournament.

Western's overall quality in debate and in individual event speech competition has propelled the program to national and international recognition. The team has grown to 43 members from Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Texas, California, Arizona, Florida and Massachusetts.

The 2003-04 season begins Sept. 20 at Purdue University. Western will host the WKU/Miami of Ohio Swing Tournament Oct. 3-5, host the British Debate Team on Nov. 3 and defend its international title next spring at the IFA tournament in Madrid, Spain.
