Bowling Green, Ky. - Morris Dees, founder and chief counsel of the Southern Poverty Law Center, will speak Thursday during Western Kentucky University's Leadership Celebration.

Dees, a force in the civil rights movement since the 1960s, will speak at 7 p.m. at the Downing University Center Theater. The lecture, co-sponsored by Campus Activities Board and Office of Student Leadership/Volunteerism, is free and open to the public.

A native of Alabama and a graduate of the University of Alabama Law School, Dees has received numerous honors for his work at the Southern Poverty Law Center, including Trial Lawyers for Public Justice's Trial Lawyer of the Year and the National Education Association's Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Award.

Dees, also an award-winning author and motivational speaker, devotes much of his efforts to suing hate groups and developing ideas for Teaching Tolerance, the center's education project. His books include an autobiography "A Season For Justice," "Hate on Trial: The Case Against America's Most Dangerous Neo-Nazi" and "Gathering Storm: America's Militia Threat."
