WKU Forensic Team Takes Top
Honors At Two Tournaments

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University's forensic team took top honors in two weekend speech and debate tournaments.

Members of the William E. Bivin Forensic Society placed first in team sweepstakes at the Owensboro Community College Invitational on Oct. 25. Western finished ahead of Berea and Belmont.

In the Oct. 24-26 Colorado College Tournament, one of the nation's largest debate tournaments, eight WKU team members won overall sweepstakes (parliamentary debate, Lincoln-Douglas debate and individual events), took first in debate sweepstakes and placed second in individual events sweepstakes.

WKU team members will travel to Indianapolis this weekend for the University of Indianapolis/Butler University Swing.

Owensboro tournament results

Nicole Estenfelder, a Florence junior, individual sweepstakes champion, communication analysis champion, programmed oral interpretation champion, second in dramatic interpretation, second in poetry interpretation, third in prose interpretation.

Kate Hertweck, a junior from Evansville, Ind., extemporaneous speaking champion, second in individual sweepstakes, second in duo interpretation (with Nick Romerhausen), third in communication analysis, fifth in informative speaking.

Corey Alderdice, a Water Valley junior, second in impromptu speaking, second in informative speaking.

Grace Bruenderman, a Lexington sophomore, third in impromptu speaking, fourth in communication analysis.

Jeff Woods, a Florence junior, informative speaking champion, second in communication analysis, second in impromptu speaking.

Melissa Messer, a San Antonio freshman, second in programmed oral interpretation, fourth in informative speaking, fourth in persuasive speaking.

Elizabeth Au, a junior from Evansville, Ind., after-dinner speaking champion, prose interpretation champion, third in persuasive speaking, fifth in programmed oral interpretation.

Lydia Nelson, a freshman from Carver, Mass., second in persuasive speaking, third in after-dinner speaking, fourth in prose interpretation.

Margaret Au, a senior from Evansville, Ind., poetry interpretation champion, second in after-dinner speaking, second in prose interpretation, third in programmed oral interpretation.

Nick Romerhausen, a sophomore from Evansville, Ind., second in duo interpretation (with Kate Hertweck), second in extemporaneous speaking.

Colorado College Tournament results

In Lincoln-Douglas Debate at Colorado Springs, Colo., three WKU debaters -- Stacy Bernaugh, a senior from Seaside, Calif.; Jenny Corum, an Auburn junior; and Jennifer Purcell, a junior from Lewisville, Texas -- had perfect 4-0 records and were the top three seeds in the Oct. 24-26 tournament.

Three other WKU debaters -- Nicole Hawk, an Upton sophomore; Alex Rogers, a junior from Leawood, Kan.; and Jordon Wadlington, an Eddyville sophomore -- had 3-1 records.

Corum and Purcell closed out the final round by defeating debaters from the University of Texas at El Paso and the University of Wyoming in semifinals.

In parliamentary debate, the teams of Stacy Bernaugh/Jennifer Purcell and Jenny Corum/Joelle Perry, a Florence freshman, advanced to quarterfinals in the tournament of 120 teams. The team of Nicole Hawk/Emily Gibson, a Hodgenville freshman, had a 3-3 record. Corum placed ninth out of 240 in speaker awards.

In the individual events portion of the tournament, Bernaugh was first in impromptu speaking and a semifinalist in extemporaneous speaking; Gibson was first in persuasive speaking; Purcell was fifth in extemporaneous speaking; and Hawk was a semifinalist in extemporaneous speaking.
