Psychology Professor To
Lecture At WKU

Bowling Green, Ky. - David Buss, professor of psychology at the University of Texas, Austin, will present "Sexual Treachery: The Co-Evolution of Conflict in Human Mating Strategies," at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 at Western Kentucky University. The lecture will be in room 166 of Mass Media and Technology Hall.
Dr. Buss' primary research interests include the evolutionary psychology of human mating strategies; conflict between the sexes; prestige, status and social reputation; the emotion of jealousy; homicide; anti- homicide defenses; and stalking. He has authored or co-authored more than 170 journal articles and five books.
Dr. Buss ranks among the top 25 psychologists whose work is most frequently described in introductory psychology textbooks. According to the Institute for Scientific Information, he is among the 250 psychologists most highly cited in psychology journals.
Dr. Buss is a Distinguished Fellow of the New England Institute for Cognitive and Evolutionary Psychology, and was elected as a Fellow of both the American Psychological Society (1997) and the American Psychological Association (1996). He has also been an APA Distinguished Scientist Lecturer, a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, and a recipient of the APA Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contributions to Psychology. His 1999 book "Evolutionary Psychology: The New Science of the Mind" received the 2000 Robert W. Hamilton Book Award.
After completing his doctorate in 1981 at the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Buss spent four years as an assistant professor at Harvard University. In 1985, he moved to the University of Michigan, where he taught for 11 years and received the Distinguished Faculty Recognition Award. Dr. Buss accepted his current position at the University of Texas in 1996. He received the University of Texas President's Associates Teaching Excellence Award in 2001.
Dr. Buss' other books include "Personality: Domains of Knowledge about Human Nature" (2002, with R. Larsen), "The Dangerous Passion: Why Jealousy is as Necessary as Love and Sex" (2000), "Sex, Power, Conflict: Evolutionary and Feminist Perspectives" (1996, with N. Malamuth), "The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating" (1994), and "Personality Psychology: Recent Trends, Emerging Directions" (1989, with N. Cantor).
Dr. Buss is president-elect of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society. Between 1990 and 2003, he has served on the editorial boards of several journals.
