October 28, 2003

Bowling Green, Ky. - Today, representatives of U.S. Bank, Western Kentucky University, area artists and arts organizations announced the revival of the CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS - OPEN ART EXHIBITION, a regional art competition providing both amateur and professional artists opportunity to showcase their work.

Participation in this highly successful art extravaganza, which began in the mid-1980s and continued for 16 years, increased annually, making accommodation at U.S. Bank difficult. The two-year hiatus allowed the bank to forge a new partnership with the Kentucky Library and Museum, which will host the next exhibition, Feb. 28-29, 2004.

Although the venue is different, most aspects of the exhibition remain unchanged, including the participation of WKU's Visual Arts Department, who, along with the Kentucky Library and Museum, will receive a portion of the proceeds from sales for scholarships.

Specifically, the 2004 OPEN ART EXHIBITION is open to Kentucky residents 18 years or older, who live within a 65-mile radius of Bowling Green. Participants may submit one, but no more than two works in either the amateur or professional division; and there is a non-refundable entry fee of $5 per work.

Categories are painting, watercolor, works on paper, fiber arts, ceramics, sculpture and photography. All entries must be original and completed during the past two years. If participants submit two works, both will be displayed.

Juror for next year's exhibition will be Peter David Bodnar III from Louisville, Ky. The jurying process will be completed after all work is submitted.

Two major awards will be given: the U.S. Bank Purchase Award; and a $250 Best of Show Award sponsored by The World's Greatest Studio Tour. Awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Professional category will be $200, $125 and $75, respectively; in the Amateur division, 1st, 2nd and 3rd will be $100, $50 and $25, respectively.

Hours for the public to view the exhibition will be 1 - 5pm, Saturday, the 28th; and 1 - 4:30pm, Sunday, the 29th at the Kentucky Library and Museum.

Award-winning entries will be exhibited at the Kentucky Library and Museum from March 6 - April 4, 2004.

Full details - specifications, delivery/retrieval of entries, and entry forms -- are in the Open Art Exhibition Prospectus, available at U.S. Bank locations, online at www.wku.edu/Library/museum/artshow or by contacting Donna Parker, Kentucky Museum Exhibits Curator, (270) 745-6083 or kymus@wku.edu
