WKU Campus Safety Task Force
Formed; Conducts Initial Meeting

May 16, 2003

Bowling Green, Ky. - Members of a newly appointed task force met today to begin reviewing all aspects of campus safety at Western Kentucky University. Mike Littell, co-chair of the WKU Parents Advisory Council, will direct the independent advisory group.

"As co-chair of the WKU Parents Advisory Council, I have been proud to work with other parents of students on campus safety and security issues," Littell said. "The Campus Safety Task Force has been created to review campus safety and security policies and procedures. We will provide a set of recommendations to the WKU administration for their review and possible implementation."

Dr. Gary Ransdell, president of Western, met with the group to offer the full support of the university and express his personal interest in this process. "No group will have more autonomy and authority to evaluate everything related to our campus-living environment, make appropriate recommendations for improvement, and review the effectiveness of existing policies and procedures. This group is to be independent and completely empowered," he said.

Parents of current or prospective students, current or prospective students, faculty, staff, residents of Bowling Green/Warren County or other interested individuals may submit questions, comments or concerns to CampusSafetyTaskForce@wku.edu. By mid-summer, the Campus Safety Task Force will either affirm policies and procedures, or recommend appropriate changes or revisions. A final report of their findings will be made available to all parents and the public at that time.

Others serving on the Task Force are: Tracy Anderkin, resident assistant; Bridget Bailey, resident assistant; John Bradley, Student Government Association president; Natasha DeJarnett, former resident assistant; Donna Harmon, WKU Alumni Association president elect; Jessica Jolly, Alpha Delta Pi president; Dean Kahler, Admissions director; Katy Tinius, Parents Advisory Council member; Kit Tolbert, WKU director of housing operations; Bill Waltrip, Bowling Green Chief of Police and Parents Advisory Council member; and Glen Woodard, WKU Police assistant shift commander.
