WKU Agriculture Department
Receives $80,000 For Scholarships
May 12, 2003
Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University's Agriculture Department has received $80,000 in scholarship funding from U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company.
In the past six years, the company has provided $469,000 to WKU as part of more than $1.3 million donated to area universities for scholarships for sons and daughters of dark-tobacco producers in Kentucky and Tennessee.
Agriculture Department Head Jenks Britt thanked USSTC for supporting "scholarships that help develop leaders for rural areas of Kentucky and Tennessee. Without these scholarships, many students would not be able to afford college."
At Western, 92 percent of the USSTC scholarship recipients have graduated or are still in school. "After graduation, many of the scholarship recipients return to the farm and are directly involved in production agriculture," Dr. Britt said.
"These scholarships will provide the opportunity for men and women to develop and strengthen their voice and skills as they prepare to be more efficient and productive as they face the challenges of the 21st century," said Danny Kingins, plant manager of USSTC in Hopkinsville.
