Professor Of Southern History
To Deliver Harrison Lecture

Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. Charles Joyner, Distinguished Professor of Southern History and Culture at Coastal Carolina University, will visit Western Kentucky University next week.

Dr. Joyner is the WKU History Department's Harrison Distinguished Lecturer for 2002-03. His lecture, " 'Damn Me If I Ever Love Another Country': Confederate Nationalism in Comparative Perspective," will begin at 7:30 p.m. April 2 at the Garrett Conference Center Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Dr. Joyner's "Down by the Riverside: A South Carolina Slave Community" won the National University Press Book Award and has been called "the finest work ever written on American slavery."

His other books include "Shared Traditions: Southern History and Folk Culture," "Remember Me: Slave Life in Coastal Georgia" and "Folk Song in South Carolina."

In addition to his writing and teaching, Dr. Joyner has been active in the production of films and television and radio programs dealing with the South and has received numerous awards for his work.
