March 07, 2003
Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University faculty and students will present research this month at regional meetings of the Geological Society of America.
Presentations at the joint meeting of the South-Central and Southeastern Sections of the GSA March 12-14 in Memphis, Tenn., include:
Faculty member Chris Groves, director of the Hoffman Environmental Research Institute, along with Mammoth Cave National Park hydrologist Joe Meiman and four scientists from China on "Wet Season Hydrochemistry of the Southwest China Peak Cluster Karst." The collaborative research project looks at hydrochemical variations in karst systems of southern China and the interactions of water, rock and carbon dioxide.
Graduate student Patricia Kambesis on "Subterranean Field Studies in Lechuguilla Cave, New Mexico." The geomorphic project is documenting features of this globally significant cave system, which was first discovered in 1986.
Former WKU graduate student Alan Glennon and Groves on "Measuring the Organization of a Highly Developed Karst Aquifer: Fieldwork in the Martin Ridge Cave System, Kentucky." This project has investigated subterranean streams in this cave system near Mammoth Cave.
Undergraduate students Laura M. Demott and Mollie K. Laird and geography and geology faculty member Andrew Wulff on "Geochemistry and Petrogenesis of Lavas from the Casitas Shield, Volcan Cerro Azul, Southern Volcanic Zone, Chile." The project is studying lavas at two volcanic centers in the Andes Mountains.
Presentations at the North-Central Section of the GSA March 24-25 in Kansas City, Mo., include:
