WKU Offering New
Certificate Programs
June 02, 2003
Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University is offering three new certificate programs in organizational communication and leadership.
The Certificate in Organizational Communication offers a graduate certificate in organizational communication without the research class requirements associated with the master's degree. It requires 12 hours of graduate courses (four courses) and will be broadcast over interactive television on weekends to Owensboro, Elizabethtown, Glasgow and Bowling Green.
All courses can be completed between June 2003 and March 2004 and the first course, Multinational Business Communication, will run June 20-Aug. 2. The second class, Mediation and Negotiation in Intercultural Settings, will be offered August-October; Organizational Communication will be offered October-December, and the final course, either Interpersonal or Small Group Communication, will be available January-March.
Western is also offering two certificates in Leadership Studies, one at the graduate level and one undergraduate.
The graduate certificate is 14 hours (five courses) and offers Introduction to Leadership, three elective courses and a final practicum in which students take leadership roles in defined activities. The certificate can be earned without enrolling in a master's degree program and the introduction and practicum courses are available this fall.
The undergraduate certificate is 15 hours (five courses) and can be earned in addition to an undergraduate major and minor. The first class is Introduction to Leadership Studies, which is followed by three electives and a practicum experience. All leadership classes are available during the fall 2003 semester.
"These three new certificate programs provide innovative ways to gain knowledge, experience and recognition for advanced knowledge in communication or leadership," Dr. Cecile Garmon, coordinator of Leadership Studies, said.
