WKU Student Receives
Scholarship Fom RTNDF

Bowling Green, Ky. - Kelly Sparks, a Western Kentucky University student from Thelma, Ky., has won a national $1,000 scholarship from the Radio Television News Directors Foundation.

Sparks, a senior from Johnson County, is a part-time reporter for WBKO-TV in Bowling Green, is an intern this summer at WLEX-TV in Lexington and is a reporter for WKU NewsChannel 12 and WWHR-FM.

Earlier this year, Sparks won a second-place award in Television Spot News

Reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists for her report "McRoberts Floods" following her summer 2002 internship at WYMT-TV in Hazard. She also won honors from the Kentucky Associated Press for best news report, first place; best reporter, second place; and best feature, first place.

Sparks will graduate in May 2004 with a double major in broadcasting and public relations. She was one of 14 scholarship winners selected this year by the RTNDF.

Western has had 10 RTNDF scholarship recipients in the past 11 years. The others are Stephanie Gibney (1993), Tim Ernst (1994), Carrie Jones (1996), Kim Olson (1997), Julie Goodwin (1999), Lisa Hughes and Amy Jones (2000), Kyle Edelen and Brandon Bratcher (2002).
