January 31, 2003

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University announced today that it has a received a gift from Kentucky National Bank to fund scholarships for students from Hardin County, Ky. This $10,000 gift was made in honor of Lois Gray of Vine Grove, Ky., chair of the WKU Board of Regents and a founding board member for Kentucky National Bank.

According to Larry Calvert, CEO of Kentucky National Bank, the gift will annually provide four $500 scholarships to graduates of Central Hardin, Elizabethtown, John Hardin and North Hardin high schools. These students will be referred to as the "Lois Gray Scholars."

"Through her leadership, Lois has helped shape the quality educational opportunities our young people enjoy," Calvert said. "This gift is a fitting tribute to her and a sound investment Kentucky National Bank is making in our youth—the future of Elizabethtown and Hardin County."

Kentucky National Bank President Ronnie Pence said the bank has always been concerned with education and advancing students in the local community.

"In addition, Lois has been very active in education for many years," he said. "Now that she is serving as chair of the WKU Board of Regents, we felt we should do something in her honor. Western is a wonderful school, and we look forward to partnering with them."

Gray also spent more than 10 years as superintendent of Hardin County Schools.

Gray said she was surprised and extremely touched that the bank chose to make this gift in her honor. "I have been involved with Kentucky National Bank since its beginning, and they have always had an interest in education and in supporting the young people of Hardin County," she said. "I look forward to knowing these young people who will be receiving the next step in their education at Western."

WKU President Gary A. Ransdell expressed his appreciation for Gray and her service to Western.

"Lois has been an outstanding member of our Board of Regents," he said. "It is indeed appropriate that Kentucky National Bank has chosen to honor her in such a wonderful way. It is a fitting tribute to her interest in and dedication to higher education in Kentucky."
