WKU Students Second, Third
In Hearst Photo Competition

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University students finished second and third in the sports and news photojournalism competition of the 43rd annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program.

Brett Flashnick, a sophomore from Columbia, S.C., finished second and received a $1,500 scholarship. Amanda Odeski, a senior from Dallas, was third and received a $1,000 scholarship. WKU's School of Journalism and Broadcasting receives matching awards.

Flashnick and Odeski also qualified for a semifinal round of judging this June.

Western advanced to first place in the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition after two of three photojournalism competitions. The rest of the top 10 is San Jose State, San Francisco State, Southern California, Florida, North Carolina, Ball State, Montana, Texas and Penn State.

The Hearst Journalism Awards Program consists of writing, photojournalism and broadcast news competitions. In the past three years, Western has won the overall intercollegiate title twice and finished second once. Final winners will be named in April.
