Journalist Helen Thomas To Be
Honored At WKU Commencement

December 02, 2003

Bowling Green, Ky. - Longtime White House correspondent Helen Thomas will receive an honorary doctorate Dec. 13 at Western Kentucky University's 154th Commencement.

Thomas, a native of Winchester, Ky., covered the White House from John F. Kennedy to Bill Clinton for United Press International. She closed each presidential news conference with "Thank You, Mr. President." Thomas and WKU President Gary Ransdell will deliver remarks during the 10 a.m. ceremony at Diddle Arena.

In its largest December commencement, Western will confer degrees to 1,202 graduates – 139 associate, 697 baccalaureate and 366 master's. WKU has conducted a December ceremony since 1996.

About 650 students are expected to participate in the ceremony, Registrar Freida Eggleton said. The record number of December graduates is a reflection of Western's enrollment growth over the past five years, she said.

Accounting professor Charles T. Hays, the University's longest tenured faculty member, will lead the processional as chief marshal and carry the University Mace for his sixth and final time before retiring. The ceremony will include recognition of honor graduates and a parade of flags in recognition of international students.

The ceremony will be broadcast on Western's Public Television, WKYU-PBS, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14.
