WKU Hosting Numerous
Lectures During Fall Semester

Bowling Green, Ky. - Noted authors, activists, television stars and movie directors are among the speakers coming to Western Kentucky University this fall.

The list of lecturers includes Morris Dees, founder and chief counsel for the Southern Poverty Law Center; Rue McClanahan, one of "The Golden Girls"; Mitch Albom, a sports writer and author of "Tuesdays with Morrie"; and George Romero, director of "Night of the Living Dead."

This fall's lectures include the following:

Sept. 11: Morris Dees, 7 p.m., Downing University Center Theater. Dees, a major force in the civil rights movement, also is an award-winning author and motivational speaker. (Co-sponsored by Campus Activities Board and Office of Student Leadership/Volunteerism.)

Sept.17: Winona LaDuke, 7:30 p.m., Mass Media and Technology Hall, room 166. LaDuke, an environmentalist, activist and writer, will speak on "Last Standing Woman: A Sweeping Indictment of Racism and Oppression." (Sponsored by Gail Martin Lecture Series, Catherine Coogan Ward Visiting Professorship for Women's Studies, Campus Activities Board, Rodes Helm Lecture Series, Potter College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Department of History.)

Sept. 25: Henry Louis Gates, 7:30 p.m., Van Meter Auditorium. Gates will discuss the trials and tribulations in bringing to light W.E.B. DuBois's dream of an African American Encyclopedia. (Sponsored by Cultural Enhancement Series.)

Oct. 6: Rue McClanahan, 7 p.m., Downing University Center Theater. McClanahan, an award-winning actress, is the Women's Breast Cancer Month Spokeswoman. (Sponsored by Campus Activities Board.)

Oct. 13: Erin Weed, 7 p.m., Downing University Center Theater. Weed is founder of Girls Fight Back, a personal safety program for college women. (Sponsored by Campus Activities Board.)

Oct. 15: Mitch Albom, 7 p.m., Van Meter Auditorium. Albom is a nationally syndicated radio host, nationally syndicated columnist, network television commentator, and best selling author. His newest book, "The Five People You Meet in Heaven," will be on sale at the lecture. (Sponsored by Mary E. Hensley Lecture Series.)

Oct. 20: George Romero, 7 p.m., Downing University Center Theater. Films in the "Night of the Living Dead" series will be shown that week on the university center's fourth floor. (Sponsored by Campus Activities Board.)

Nov. 12: Jean Kilbourne, 7:30 p.m., Van Meter Auditorium. Kilbourne is recognized for her pioneering work on alcohol and tobacco advertising and the image of women in advertising. (Sponsored by Catherine Coogan Ward Visiting Professorship for Women's Studies, Campus Activities Board, Rodes Helm Lecture Series, Potter College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Department of History.)
