WKU Gearing Up For Fall Semster;
Classes Begin Aug. 18

Bowling Green, Ky. - Preparations are continuing for the fall semester at Western Kentucky University where classes begin Aug. 18.

About 1,900 first-time students will arrive on campus Aug. 10 for MASTER Plan, a program to ensure a successful transition to the University.

Western's enrollment, which has grown 22.5 percent since 1997, hit a record of 17,818 last fall and is expected to exceed 18,000 this fall, according to Dr. Luther Hughes, associate vice president of Academic Affairs for Enrollment Management.

Students will find $155 million in construction projects (residence halls, classroom buildings, athletic facilities, dining facilities and student center) continuing on campus. Nearing completion are renovations of Downing University Center's dining facilities and E.A. Diddle Arena and construction of Mass Media and Technology Hall.

Among other upcoming campus events are the following:

  • Aug. 8: WKU's Board of Regents meets at 1:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Building.
  • Aug. 10-14: MASTER (Making Academic and Social Transitions Educationally Rewarding) Plan educational sessions, resource programs and social events at various campus locations.
  • Aug. 12: President Gary Ransdell updates faculty and staff on campus issues and presents his annual diversity and spirit awards at the opening faculty and staff convocation at 8 a.m. at Van Meter Auditorium.
  • Aug. 14: Residence halls open for all students.
  • Aug. 14-15: Wrap-up registration and Orientation-Advisement-Registration sessions.
  • Aug. 18: Classes begin
  • Aug. 20: Welcome Back Western Festival, featuring local businesses, begins at 11 a.m. on the Preston Health and Activities Center lawn.
  • Aug. 28: The defending I-AA national champion Hilltoppers open the 2003 football season at 7 p.m. against Union at L.T. Smith Stadium.
