Asbestos Removal In WKU
Center Nearly Complete
August 18, 2003
Bowling Green, Ky. - Removal and cleanup of asbestos in Western Kentucky University's Center for Research and Development on Nashville Road is nearly complete.
Charlotte Reeder, Western's Environmental Health and Safety director, said the University received clearance on the last section of the building's common areas on Monday. Workers from Interstate Environmental Services Inc. of Glasgow had divided the area into five sections, removing all asbestos-containing materials and cleaning the areas of dust.
Western will spend more than $277,000 to test, monitor and clear asbestos from the common areas of what was once the Bowling Green Mall. The asbestos fiber release occurred when maintenance workers began removing ceiling tiles in June. Reeder said that air monitoring showed that there was no contamination in the occupied offices that had doors that open into the common areas.
Crews from Interstate Environmental should be finished at the end of this week or the first of next week, Reeder said.
