Perform Concert April 29
April 10, 2003
Bowling Green, Ky. - The Music Department's ninth annual scholarship concert will feature Western Kentucky University's nationally renowned Wind Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. April 29 at Van Meter Auditorium.
The concert, titled "A Season of Symphonies, Act 4," features a wind band masterwork that fulfills the title's implied content: "Sinfonietta" by Ingolf Dahl. Admission is free.
This is the fourth symphony performed by the WKU Wind Ensemble this season written specifically for the wind band. This concert features student winners of the concerto competition who will perform solo selections. Hillary Bogert of Louisville will be featured on the exciting "Polacca" movement from von Weber's "2nd Concerto for Clarinet" while Tom Wimsatt of Elizabethtown will perform "Fantasia for Euphonium" by Gordon Jacob.
Other compositions include the premiere of a work commissioned in part by the WKU bands, "Fascinating Ribbons" by Joan Tower, one of the world's premier female composers. Jeffrey Steiner, associate director of bands, will conduct that work.
Guest conductor Franklin Norris of Glasgow will direct the wind ensemble's performance of "Fanfare and Allegro" by Clifton Williams. Noted University of Louisville composer Dr. Frederick Speck has contributed a new work titled "the bell within the steeple wild," based upon a poem by Emily Dickinson. "English Dances, Set Two" by Malcolm Arnold and "Irish Tune from County Derry" by Percy Grainger also will be performed.
