WKU Journalism Students April 30, 2003 The College Heights Herald, WKU's student newspaper, was named Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper (published two to four times a week) in the competition that includes Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois. Editors for the contest period were Brian Moore and Caroline Lynch, both of Louisville. The Herald's online version was named Best All-Around Online Student Newspaper. First-place winners advance to the national SPJ competition. Results (all from College Heights Herald unless noted) are as follows: Editorial writing: Caroline Lynch, a Louisville graduate, first Sports column writing: Kyle Tucker, a senior from Clarksville, Tenn., first; Kyle Hightower, a Paducah junior, second. Spot news reporting: Rex Hall Jr., a Louisville senior, "Father, mother, young son die in murder-suicide," The Tennessean, third. General news reporting: Taylor Loyal, a graduate from Roanoke, Va., "Buried Dreams," third. In-depth reporting: Dave Shinall, a Bowling Green senior, "Study shows mold in FAC may be harmful," second. Magazine non-fiction article: Dave Shinall, "Fishing for Answers in the Neuroscience Laboratory," The Western Scholar, second. Spot news photography: Thomas Cordy, a senior from Huntsville, Ala., "Student hit on University," first; Robyn Larsen, a graduate from Idaho Falls, Idaho, "A total loss," second; Henrik Edsenius, a senior from West Des Moines, Iowa, "Klan rally draws few supporters," third.
