Retired Marine Corps General April 01, 2003 Maj. Gen. Jerry D. Humble, a WKU graduate, will discuss "Leadership Under Crisis Management and Homeland Security Issues in the U.S." at 6 p.m. April 8 at Van Meter Auditorium. The WKU Leadership Studies lecture is free and open to the public. Humble, who was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1969, concluded a successful military career in January. As a lieutenant, he served as an Infantry Platoon Commander in the Sixth Marine Regiment and as a Platoon and Company Commander with 3d Reconnaissance Battalion where he deployed to Vietnam with a Battalion Landing Team. He also served at Marine Barracks, Norfolk, Va., as the Security Officer, and as the USMC Detachment Commander at the Armed Forces Staff College where he was promoted to captain in 1974. As a captain, Humble attended the Amphibious Warfare School, served as a Platoon Commander at the Officers Candidate School and completed a tour with the British Royal Marine Commandos where he commanded K Company of 42 Commando. He also commanded an infantry company in the Sixth Marine Regiment and served with the 32nd Marine Amphibious Unit where he established the Arctic Warfare Training Program. As a major, he served as a Battalion Landing Team Operations Officer and was the Arctic Warfare Training Officer of the 36th Marine Amphibious Unit. He then commanded Recruiting Station in St. Louis. Humble is a distinguished graduate of the USMC Command and staff College and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. While a lieutenant colonel, Humble served with the 2nd Marine Division where he commanded Battalion Landing Team ½, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Special Operations Capable. During this time, he co-authored the MEU (SOC) Training Program and developed the Rapid Response Raid Planning Process. He also commanded the 2d Light Armored Infantry Battalion before attending the National War College. From there, he served with the State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics Matters as the Special Operations/Security Advisor. During Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Humble was the G-3, 1st Marine Division, and was promoted to colonel in 1991. As a colonel, he reactivated the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and led the unit through several special operations certifications and deployment phases in the Asia/Pacific theater. He then became the director of the Marine Air Ground Task Force, Staff Training Program Center, Quantico, Va., where he was selected for brigadier general. Humble took command of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot/Eastern Recruiting Region, Parris Island, S.C. He then assumed command of 3rd Marine Division where he was selected for promotion to major general. He then served as the Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Korea and Assistant Chief of Staff, C/J5, United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, and United States Forces Korea. His last assignment was as Commanding General, Marine Corps Recruiting Command. His personal decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with two Gold Stars and Combat "V," Meritorious Service Medal with one Gold Star, Joint Service Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one Gold Star, Navy Achievement Medal and Combat Action Ribbon.
