WKU Broadcasting Students,
Alumni, Faculty Honored

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University students, alumni and faculty have been honored in recent broadcasting competitions.

Seven students and WKU NewsChannel 12 received awards in the Kentucky Associated Press competition sponsored by the Associated Press Broadcasters' Association.

Radio news report: Matt Horstman, a Bowling Green junior, first; Brandon Bratcher, an Owensboro senior, second.

Television newscast: WKU NewsChannel 12.

Television sportscast: Kyle Edelen, a Louisville senior, first.

Television news report: Kelly Sparks, a Thelma senior, first; Brandon Bratcher, second.

Television reporter: LaKecia Shockley, a Bowling Green senior, first; Kelly Sparks, second; Haley Pinson, a Herndon senior, honorable mention.

Television feature: Kelly Sparks, first; Brandon Bratcher, second; Fawn Leonard, a Mount Washington junior, honorable mention.

Four students were honored in the Society of Professional Journalists regional competition. First-place winners advance to national competition.

Radio feature: "Family Court Amendment," Bowling Green senior Dave Shinall, WKCT-AM, first; "Judicial Campaigns," Dave Shinall, WKCT-AM, second.

Radio in-depth reporting: "Rally Day in Bowling Green," Dave Shinall, WKCT-AM, first.

Radio sports reporting: "Diddle Arena Renovations," Kyle Edelen, News 91.7, third.

Radio daily newscast: WWHR-FM's "Morning Newscasts," Dave Shinall and LaGrange sophomore Samantha Ragland, first.

Television spot news reporting: "McRoberts Floods," Kelly Sparks, WYMT-TV, second.

Television feature: "Big Red's Mascot Challenge," Kyle Edelen, WKU News Channel 12, third.

Several alumni and faculty also were honored in the Kentucky Associated Press competition. Winners will be honored May 31 at a luncheon in Elizabethtown.

Newscast: WLEX, news director Bruce Carter, first.

Enterprise or investigative reporting: "Paul Patton Scandal," WHAS, Mark Hebert, first.

Sports special: "Season of Dreams," WHAS, Brad Knoop and Heidi Thiel, first.

Feature or human interest story: "Mosquito Men," WTVQ, Kristi Runyon, honorable mention

News photography: "LG&E Trouble," WHAS, Doug Smith, honorable mention.

Feature photography: "Skate Park Test," WHAS, Doug Smith, second.

Television class two

Continuing news story: "ITA: Deciding the Future," WBKO, Amy Bingham, Melissa Painter, Heath Myrick and Gene Birk, second.

Sports special: "A Tribute to the Champs," WBKO, Drew Amman and Randall Parmley, first.

Feature or human interest: "A Small World," WBKO, Heath Myrick, second.

Feature photography: "Most Wonderful Time," WPSD, Heath Myrick, second.

Best photographer: "Chip 2002," WPSD, Chad Darnell, first.
