September 11, 2002 Event Brings Scholarship Benefactors, About 300 donors and students are expected to attend the Scholarship Celebration at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at Van Meter Auditorium. The event was created to honor and recognize those who have established endowed scholarships, according to Tom Hiles, WKU's vice president for Institutional Advancement. "This event represents a small way for the Western family, and particularly the student beneficiaries, to say thank you," he said. Through funds in the College Heights Foundation and WKU Foundation, Western annually awards more than $1 million in endowed scholarships to nearly 1,200 recipients. This year's event will include remarks from Katie Towery of Marion, recipient of the William L. "Gander" and Barbara Ann Terry Scholarship; James Ralph Heltsley of Glasgow, recipient of the Bruce Goodman Scholarship; and Tommy Gumm of Glasgow, representing the Alliance Corporation Business Scholarship and Leadership Scholarship. Hiles, WKU President Gary A. Ransdell and Alex Downing, president of the College Heights Foundation, also will make remarks. For more information, contact Institutional Advancement at (270) 745-6208.
