Statement From WKU President
Gary Ransdell

Bowling Green, Ky. - Separate accidents have claimed the lives of a current student and a former student at Western Kentucky University. Zach Carroll, a sophomore, died Saturday from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. Matthew Rzepka, a student from 1999-2001, died early Thursday when he and a student from the University of Kentucky fell through a third-floor window at a residence hall on the UK campus.

Dr. Gary A. Ransdell, president of Western Kentucky University, said both accidents will have a lasting effect on the Western family.

"The Western Kentucky University family has been deeply saddened by these two incidents," he said. "We extend our sympathy to the families and friends of these two young men whose lives were tragically cut short. As the father of two, I can't imagine what these families are experiencing now."

Dr. Ransdell urged all students to be safety conscious as they prepare for the summer.

"For many students, the summer season represents major changes in their lives, whether through graduation, internships, summer jobs or vacation trips," he said. "The events of the past week have reinforced the family atmosphere present on our campus. We want all of the members of the Western family to remain safe."
