Two Students Honored In Hearst Photojournalism
Contest; WKU Moves To Third Place Overall
In National Rankings
Bowling Green, Ky. - Two Western Kentucky University students have been honored in the final photojournalism competition in the 42nd annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program.
Andreas Fuhrmann, a senior from Bowling Green, placed second in picture story and received a $1,500 award. Brian Wagner, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., was third in the contest and received $1,000 award. Western's School of Journalism and Broadcasting received matching amounts.
Fuhrmann and Wagner join WKU broadcasting students Lisa Hughes of Scottsville and Cory Ramsey of Fulton in the semifinal round of judging. National finals in photo, broadcasting and writing are scheduled May 31-June 4 in San Francisco.
The second-place finish in the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition and a fourth-place finish in the Intercollegiate Broadcast News Competition have moved Western to third overall in the Hearst competition in with one writing contest remaining.
Western, which is 16th in Intercollegiate Writing Competition after five of six events, has won the Hearst Intercollegiate Journalism Competition the past two years. Final results will be announced in April after the spot news writing competition.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program recognizes excellence in writing, photojournalism and broadcasting.
In the overall competition, Florida is first followed by North Carolina, Western, Syracuse and Penn State.
The top five in the photo competition were Florida, Western, North Carolina, San Francisco State and Ball State. The broadcast news competition's top five were Syracuse, Arizona State, Florida, Western and North Carolina.
In the writing competition, the top five are Northwestern, Penn State, Kansas, Missouri and Indiana.
