Student Receives Veterans Upward
Bound Scholarship
Bowling Green, Ky. - Deidre "Dee Dee" Stewart, a Western Kentucky University student from Bowling Green, is the first recipient of the Veterans Upward Bound Scholarship made possible through donations from the American Legion Post 23 and VFW Post 1298 in Bowling Green/Warren County.
The $200 scholarship, which will be awarded for the fall 2002 semester, will assist Stewart as she begins her final year of college. Stewart, a single mother who has a teenage son, is working and taking classes as she prepares for a career in nursing.
"When she first came to Veterans Upward Bound, Deidre spoke about not having any confidence in terms of higher education and she worried about her math skills most of all," said Randy Wilson, program director. "She now credits VUB for not only helping her with the academic skills she needed to succeed in postsecondary school but also with helping her build her confidence and for providing her emotional support and for believing in her through the past few years."
