July 08, 2002 WKU Student Newspaper Finalist The College Heights Herald is one of three finalists for Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper in the 2001 Mark of Excellence competition. The others are The Breeze at James Madison University and The Round Up at New Mexico State University. The Herald's coverage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is a finalist in the Spot News Reporting category. Photojournalism major Thomas Cordy, a senior from Huntsville, Ala., is a finalist in the Photo Illustration category. Awards will be presented Sept. 12-14 at the 2002 SPJ National Convention in Fort Worth, Texas. The competition had more than 2,700 entries in 45 categories. "The Mark of Excellence competition represents some of the finest examples of collegiate print, broadcast and photojournalism in the country," said Jim Highland, WKU print journalism professor and SPJ vice president for campus chapter affairs. "That is what we will be honoring in Fort Worth. National achievements such as these help young journalists increase their career possibilities following graduation."
