WKU Selected For NAACP/NASA
Scholars Academy
Bowling Green, Ky. - Forty students from Warren, Logan, Simpson and Barren counties have been selected to attend a NAACP/NASA Math, Science and Technology Saturday Scholars Academy, hosted by Western Kentucky University.
The academy for minority and/or disadvantaged fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students begins with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday at WKU's South Campus. The program concludes on Saturday, May 25. All sessions, except for field trips, will be conducted at WKU's Bowling Green Community College.
The Saturday Academy integrates science, math and technology activities and uses an outreach component to address mentoring, tutoring, critical thinking and parent participation. The NAACP/NASA academy began as a three-year pilot program in Baltimore and has expanded to Kentucky.
Objectives of the Saturday Academy program are to build students' interest in math, science and technology and improve their skills; motivate students to pursue careers in those area; heighten their awareness of the importance of math, science and technology; and build self-confidence by removing negative attitudes toward math and science.
