Former Herald Editor One Of Five
'Most Valuable Staffers'
Bowling Green, Ky. - Ryan Clark, who served as editor of Western Kentucky University's student newspaper last fall, has been named one of the nation's five "Most Valuable Staffers" of college newspapers.
Clark, a senior from Louisville, was selected for the honor in a competition sponsored by the Scripps Howard Foundation and conducted by College Media Advisers.
He will receive a $5,000 scholarship from the Scripps Howard Foundation. The College Heights Herald also will receive $5,000. The award will be presented March 15 at the Spring National College Media Convention in New York City.
"When any print journalist ever receives an honor or has success at Western, it's more than likely due to their involvement with the College Heights Herald. The same is true in this case," Clark said. "Without the Herald, I wouldn't have had a chance in this profession. But on a deeper level, I wouldn't have had the family the paper provides, or the memories. I share this honor with the entire staff."
Clark also has served as features editor, sports editor and columnist of the award-winning, twice-weekly college paper. He's had summer internships at The Baltimore Sun, The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va., and the Cadiz Record in Trigg County, Ky.
The Most Valuable Staffer Award is the second major award Clark has received from the Scripps Howard Foundation. Last summer he was one of 10 college journalists selected for the foundation's Top Ten Scholarship, a $10,000 award.
