WKU Student Serves As Intern
At Beef Industry Convention
Bowling Green, Ky. - A Western Kentucky University agriculture student got an inside look at the nation's beef industry during the National Cattlemen's Beef Association annual convention.
David Newsom, a senior from Jasper, Ind., was one of 10 student interns selected to serve at the Feb. 4-9 event in Denver.
"It was an unbelievable experience," said Newsom, the son of Kerry and Jane Newsom. "I was able to interact with leaders in the beef cattle industry including NCBA staff, other interns, guest speakers, fellow cattlemen and event sponsors."
The National Cattlemen's Beef Association is the marketing organization and trade association for America's one million cattle farmers and ranchers.
During the convention, NBCA members had the opportunity to voice their opinions, set industry goals, attend educational sessions and network with industry leaders, he said.
"The beef cattle industry is fortunate to have people that are innovative, goal oriented, hard working and dedicated to the survival of production agriculture," Newsom said.
One of those people, he said, is President Bush, who spoke to about 6,000 at the convention. Bush discussed the importance of the agricultural industry and was supportive of the beef cattle industry, Newsom said.
"Bush, a fellow rancher, truly understands the impact agriculture has on the U.S. economy and the need for agricultural development so that the United States can continue to be the world's agricultural leader," he said.
