Three WKU Students Honored
In Hearst Competitions
Bowling Green, Ky. - Three Western Kentucky University broadcasting students have been honored in the 42nd annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program.
Lisa Hughes, a December graduate from Scottsville, finished fourth and qualified for the semifinals in the radio news competition. Hughes and WKU's School of Journalism and Broadcasting will receive $750 awards.
Dan Gaddie, a Louisville senior, tied for 12th in radio news.
Chris Freeman, a junior from Newburgh, Ind., finished sixth in television news. Freeman and the School of Journalism and Broadcasting will receive $500 awards.
Hughes and Cory Ramsey, a Fulton junior who placed second in the radio feature contest, will submit additional tapes for the semifinal round of judging in April. Five semifinal winners will advance to national finals May 31-June 4 in San Francisco.
Western placed fourth overall in the Intercollegiate Broadcast News Competition behind Syracuse, Arizona State and Florida.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program recognizes excellence in writing, photojournalism and broadcasting. Western has won the overall intercollegiate title for the past two years. Final results from this year's competitions will be announced in April.
