Bowling Green, Ky. - Two Western Kentucky University students have received awards in the first photojournalism competition in the 43rd annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program.

Brian Wagner, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., finished second and received a $1,500 scholarship in the feature and portrait/personality photography contest. Wagner also qualified for a semifinal round of judging next June.

John Lok, a Bowling Green senior, was sixth in the contest and received a $500 scholarship. WKU's School of Journalism and Broadcasting will receive matching awards totaling $2,000.

After the first of three photojournalism contests, Western is in second place behind San Jose State. Other schools in the top five are Florida, San Francisco State and North Carolina.

The Hearst Journalism Awards Program consists of six writing, three photojournalism and four broadcast news competitions. In the past three years, Western has won the overall intercollegiate title twice and finished second once.
