WKU Journalism, Media Management
Trainers Cambodia Bound
December 17, 2002
Bowling Green, Ky. - The International Journalism and Media Management Training Program continues the training of international media professionals by conducting a seminar and station residencies in Cambodia.
Trainers from Western Kentucky University's Public Radio, the WKU School of Journalism and Broadcasting, and a WKU alumna are headed to Cambodia to help promote democracy and improve reporting on HIV/AIDS. It's part of the second follow-up training for the program based at WKU's Public Broadcasting Services.
The program promotes democracy through enhanced journalism training for reporters and station managers. The in-country training is the culmination of a three-part series that included sessions conducted in Bowling Green in April and May 2002.
Terry Reagan, director of development for Western's Public Broadcasting, and Bart White, WKU journalism professor, will conduct station management training with three-day residencies at select stations. The stations are located in Phnom Penh and Battambang. The team leaves Bowling Green on Dec. 26 and returns Jan. 9, 2003.
Kevin Willis, announcer/producer for Western's Public Radio, and Renee Shaw, WKU alumna and KET producer, will conduct radio journalism training, consisting of a five-day seminar in Phnom Penh followed by two-day station residencies. This team leaves on Dec. 30 and completes the training on Jan. 14, 2003.
The project is a collaboration between Western's Public Broadcasting and Internews® Network. Internews is an international non-profit that supports open media worldwide and is responsible for training thousands of journalists in emerging democracies in the past decade.
The program is funded through the U.S. Agency for International Development by an appropriation secured by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY). McConnell recognized the collaborative possibilities of Western and Internews and was instrumental in bringing the partners together and in the continuing support for this program. McConnell has long been an advocate for strong independent media around the world, a critical component of democracy building.
