Agronomy Field Day Aug. 8
At WKU Farm

Bowling Green, Ky. - Crop production and soil management will be spotlighted at an agronomy field day Thursday, Aug. 8, at Western Kentucky University's L.D. Brown Agricultural Exposition Center.

The free event, sponsored by WKU's agriculture department and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, begins at 5 p.m.

"How we farm is changing as much as what we farm," said Dr. Jenks Britt, head of WKU's agriculture department. "These field days are good tools to use in keeping up to date on good management practices for your own operation."

The session will feature work with forages, soil fertility and animal waste management, tours of the WKU farm and a visit by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's hay testing unit. Representatives of the state's Farm and Home Safety, Rinse and Recycle, and other programs also will be on hand.

"The focus of this field day is to enlighten participants about uses of herbicides and pesticides and how they affect crops and soil," Agriculture Commissioner Billy Ray Smith said. "WKU researchers and KDA representatives will update participants about the latest information and technologies on a number of subjects. This includes the production of alfalfa, corn, soybeans and other crops as well as proper stewardship of their land".
